Humane Education
Did you know that we offer educational programs to the community? We are happy to visit your school or meeting place, or you and your group can tour our shelter.Humane education is central to our mission. We have developed an education program that provides information to help people care for their pets in the best and most responsible ways. Not only do we share our humane message with children and teens-with hopes that they will share it with their families and peers-we also offer presentations to adults.
Our Goals
- To foster an understanding of the interdependence of people and animals and the unique qualities of companion animal.
- To develop awareness of the ways animals communicate in order to enhance safe interactions between people and animals.
- To provide specific guidelines for safe interactions with companion animals.
- To promote the responsible care of companion animals, including spaying and neutering.
- To provide information to clients of Plateauland Mobile Veterinary Clinic.
Citizen Stewardship
Through a grant from the Arizona Community Foundation, Second Chance has joined with other non-profit organizations in Arizona concerned with promoting citizen stewardship of the environment. Together with the Phoenix Zoo, Liberty Wildlife, the Arizona Animal Welfare League, Grand Canyon Trust and Tucson Audubon we are working to help each other promote citizen stewardship and leverage the impact of our individual educational programs.

In addition to our clinics, we believe that an educational component is necessary to ensure future progress in animal care and overpopulation control. In April, we introduced an educational component to the Plateauland Mobile Veterinary Clinic (PMVC). Now, our education director regularly conducts presentations to elementary-aged children and other community groups in the PMVC service area. Typically, these presentations take place just prior to our scheduled clinic visits, and generally focus on humane animal treatment, bite prevention, animal health care and the responsibilities of pet ownership. We teach children, and adults, that their pets need vaccinations every year to keep them healthy, and that spaying and neutering will help to combat their community's stray-animal problem; keep their pets healthier; reduce overpopulation; and alleviate some behaviors such as roaming, fighting and aggression.
